Happy Halloween

Looking for ways to use up your pumpkin flesh after carving your scary pumpkins.

Why not take a look at my delicious recipe for Pumpkin and ginger cupcakes.

This is the recipe that won a competition and was also featured in the fundraising book by Macmillan ‘The little book of treats’.

Mickey Mouse themed cake.

10 Mar

I made this Mickey Mouse cake for a little girl’s 1st Birthday.

The cake was a sponge cake filled with jam and buttercream, then covered in fondant/sugarpaste icing. All of the characters that are on and around the cake were made out of icing. There were 6 characters in total and these consisted of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy and pluto.

This is the front view of the cake.

Small yellow stars were dotted around the top-tier of the cake. The bottom tier was decorated with icing clouds and balloons, as seen here in the photo.

This is a side view of the cake.

Here is a view of the back of the cake, where i placed 2 of the characters, Goofy and Pluto.

I also made some cupcakes to match the Mickey Mouse theme. Aswell as a Mickey Mouse picture, the cupcakes had the little girl’s name and age on them too.

The cupcakes looked fantastic when they had been arranged around the cake by the little girl’s mum. They finished the cake off perfectly.

Bug themed Giant cupcake.

6 Mar

Well this Giant cupcake is certainly not as pretty as the ones on my last blog post but it is definitely different and it was a cool cake to make. I made this giant cupcake for someone who has an interest in bugs and they loved it!

This Giant cupcake was a chocolate cake that was filled with chocolate buttercream. The base of the cake was covered in a chocolate flavoured fondant icing to make the cupcake case/liner. All of the insects, worms and bugs were made out of fondant/sugarpaste icing and everything was edible on this cake.

What would go perfectly with a bug themed giant cupcake, i hear you ask. Well, what better than bug themed cupcakes.

The cupcakes were vanilla cupcakes filled with vanilla buttercream. Half of the cupcakes were topped with piped green buttercream to resemble grass and the other half were made to look like they had soil on top of them. The cupcakes were then finished off with an icing bug/insect.

Giant cupcakes with buttercream roses.

6 Mar

I love the look of the giant cupcake cakes when they are finished off with piped buttercream roses. They look so pretty, somehow delicate and oh so girly. Well you can imagine my joy when this week saw me making not one but two of these lovely (not so) little beauties.

This giant cupcake was a chocolate cake, filled with chocolate buttercream, topped with ivory coloured vanilla buttercream piped roses and finished off with solid milk chocolate flowers, that i made myself.

This giant cupcake was a chocolate cake filled with a chocolate and hazelnut filling, topped with pink vanilla buttercream piped roses and once again finished off with more of the milk chocolate flowers that i made.

Here is a closer look at the chocolate flowers.

Both of these giant cupcakes were presented in a solid milk chocolate base/cupcake liner that i made especially for the cakes to sit in. Although this should have been pretty straight forward, i had a slight problem with some small, hardly noticeable cracks that appeared in the chocolate liner. I suspect it may have been caused by the chocolate i used so next time i make these i will used a different chocolate and see if this helps.

An ATM with a difference!

4 Mar

Well here it is, drum roll please!

This ATM is not just any ATM, there is something very different about it. Yes i know it is pink and no that is not what makes it so different. Well it does…but…erm no that’s not it anyway. Swiftly moving on…… This ATM machine is actually the world’s 1st 24 hour cupcake dispensing machine, yes you heard me right, cupcakes! You will not find any money been dispensed from this machine but on the other hand if you are looking for instant sugary goodness, then this machine is for you.

This 1st of its kind ATM is located at Sprinkles cupcakes in Beverly Hills.

LAist got the official word from a spokesperson for Sprinkles: This automatic cupcake machine dispenses freshly baked cupcakes, cupcake mixes, apparel and even cupcakes for Fido! In the heart of Beverly Hills nestled between Sprinkles Cupcakes and the brand new Sprinkles Ice Cream, 24 Hour Sprinkles will be continuously restocked day and night with a variety of freshly baked cupcake flavors.

Here’s the report from CBS News:

Sprinkles Cupcake ATM

24 hour sprinkles even has its own Facebook page.

I wonder how long it will be until this idea catches on here in the U.K

Is this a good idea or not? Tell me what do you think.

Heart in a cupcake.

6 Feb

I had a little bit of spare time on my hands the other day and decided to whip up a batch of yummy cupcakes. These may look like any other ordinary cupcakes but wait……….

Cut these beauties in half to reveal a hidden heart inside of the cupcake. They definitely look like they were made with love.

Whilst browsing one of my favourite sites Bake it in a cake  a while ago i came across these little gems and i have been dying to give them a go ever since. These would be perfect to make for Valentines day, after all who wouldn’t want cupcakes?

Here’s how to make these lovely hidden heart cupcakes.

1) First of all you need to bake a cake to cut out your love hearts from. I made mine a lovely red/dark pink shade but really anything goes and you can make your cake any colour you like.

2) Next take a small heart cutter, this one measures approximately 1.5″

It is always a good idea to check that the hearts are not going to be too big for your cupcake cases. You can check this by placing the heart cutter inside one of the cupcake cases to get a rough idea of the size. Once you have checked the size, cut heart shapes out of the cake and set to one side on a piece of baking/greaseproof paper.

3) Line a cupcake/muffin tin with cupcake cases of your choice. I used red cases to match the colour of the hearts inside of the cupcakes but i also loved the boldness of the red cases against the softer colours of the love heart sweets, that in my opinion finished the cupcakes off perfectly.

4) Next spoon some cupcake mixture into the bottom of the cupcake cases and place one of the sponge hearts inside. Push the heart down gently until it touches the bottom. I made my cupcake mixture vanilla because i wanted to see the heart inside really stand out but once again you can use what ever flavour and colour of cupcakes you prefer.  Important please take notice of which way the hearts are sitting in the cupcake cases because if they are not facing forward, once the cupcakes are sliced open there would not be a heart shape.

5) Spoon some more cupcake mixture on top of the hearts. Don’t worry if it is not even as once they are baking the cupcakes will rise around the hearts.

6) Bake in the oven for the amount of time that your cupcake recipe requires.

7) Once baked and cooled your cupcakes are ready to be decorated in which ever style, theme or colour your would like. When the cupcakes are finished slice one in half with a sharp knife to reveal the hidden heart inside.

Like i said before with Valentines day just around the corner, these would be perfect to bake as a gift.

I personally never need an occasion or excuse to bake. For me it’s all about the excitement of trying out new ideas and nothing at all to do with the taste testing……..honest! You do believe me…don’t you?  Enjoy!

Calling all cupcakes lovers. Poll included.

13 Jan

Whilst i was writing my latest post Drinking my coffee in cupcake style I decided to create a poll to find out what everyone likes to have to drink whilst eating cupcakes. So if you could please spare a few seconds to take part in answering my poll, it will be very much appreciated.

Drinking my coffee in cupcake style.

13 Jan

Well i don’t know about everyone else but i just love to have a drink of coffee whilst enjoying a scrummy cupcake or two. Coffee and cupcakes just seem to go perfectly hand in hand and what better way to drink your coffee, than out of a cupcake themed cup. Drum roll please………. and here it is, my latest baking inspired cupcake cup.

I just need to add it to the rest of my collection of cupcake cups now.

This is my collection so far.

Hopefully i will have some more cups to add to it real soon, as i am always on the look out  for cupcake and baking based mugs and cups.

Please take a minute to answer my poll

Skateboard cake and cupcakes.

6 Jan

This was another fun cake to do and also the first time i have attempted a skateboard cake.

The design of the skateboard incorporated stars, flames and the birthday boy’s name in the middle of the cake was styled in graffiti writing.

Here is a side view of the skateboard cake.

12 skateboard themed cupcakes with the child’s age on were also made and were to be handed out to the party guests.
