60th Birthday cake.

15 Jan

Wow! It seems like such a long time since i last made a cake. I seem to have been cupcake crazy of late. This cake was for my husbands aunty for her 60th Birthday.

The cake was covered in fondant/sugarpaste icing, the rose details around the cake are also fondant/sugarpaste. The roses on top of the cake were a 50/50 mix of icing and flower/petal paste. I used a 50/50 mix as icing would have been too difficult to get any good detail with, when making the rose petals, i needed them to be delicate. If i was making the roses on wires i would have used flower/petal paste on its own but on this occasion i decided to make the roses without any wires. This makes everything on the cake edible.

Here is a closer look at some of the detail.

I love how the red roses on the corners of the cake and the green of the leaves breaks up the white a little. This ties in the roses on top, with the rest of the cake perfectly.

I was very pleased with how the roses turned out. They still need some improvement but i am happy with them all the same.

Tempting Cupcakes.

8 Jan

Well my New Years resolution to lose weight and cut down on sugar is proving to be very difficult already. I am playing around and tweaking some of my recipes for my cupcakes, which is not the problem but the taste testing is.These are my latest cupcakes.

These delicious Orange and Cranberry cupcakes were more than a little bit tempting and resulted in me eating  one or two ok maybe three of these gorgeous delights. This has to be an occupational hazard when trying to devise scrummy tasting cupcakes and lose weight at the same time. I think i need to get together a group of friends to be my tasting panel so i get the feedback without piling on the pounds…..They were just too good to resist.

A very crafty gift.

I can honestly say that i was truly delighted by the gift my sister-in-law gave me. I excitedly removed the wrapping  to uncover these handmade beauties.

A personalised very much-needed 2011 diary.

and an ever so cute mobile phone holder.

I love, love, love them and how cute do those cupcakes look. Thanks once again Lyndsey they are fabulous.

Sweet Reading

7 Jan

I absolutely love to get new Cupcake and cake decorating books, even more so when i have them bought for me. So you can imagine my excitement when this year for Christmas  i got 3 Cupcake books, all of which i have had my eye on for a while. Let me tell you i was very excited indeed.

Drum roll please………

and here they are, the new additions to the Sweet Sassy book shelf.

Planet Cake Cupcakes, Paris Cutler.

I really can’t wait to try some of the things in this book. At first glance this book seems full of good ideas and also has some very cute things in it aswell, cute is good, right.

If you are still looking for cute you certainly won’t find it in the next 2 books i received. If however you are after something a little darker with a bit of gross and gore thrown in, then these are the perfect books to go for.

Zombie Cupcakes, Zilly Rosen.

As if the ideas alone aren’t enough, this book has lots of recipes in and the cherry on my cake just had to be the Zombie Trivia that is dotted on occasional pages throughout the book. You can’t go far wrong with a bit of Zombie trivia. It made my day anyway.

Last but not least, my final book and another firm favourite is

A Zombie ate my Cupcake, Lily Vanilli.

Another book with great ideas, yummy sounding recipes, lots of weirdness and gore galore.

Sadly i haven’t had chance yet to try out anything from these books but hopefully i will get chance shortly. As soon as i do i will blog about it, post pictures and let you all know how i got on making them.

1st Cupcake of 2011

2 Jan

Happy New Year everyone.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are going to have a very lucky and happy new year.

This was not only my 1st cupcake of the New Year but it was also my first attempt at baking the famous and much talked about giant cupcake. This baby is approximately 6.5 – 7″ high and has a diameter of approximately 6″ aswell. This is one large cupcake and is possibly in the running to be my new obsession of 2011.
